Why is the development of vocabulary skills important in elementary English?

Vocabulary skills begin in elementary school and continue to grow throughout a student's life. Supporting the development of proper skills allows students to read, write, and decode information. "If students are not familiar with most words they meet in print, they will undoubtedly have trouble understanding what they read" (Vacca et al., 2020, p. 212).

Spelling Words

Spelling words helps students to build many skills in different areas, such as literacy, reading, comprehension, and writing. Spelling words also enhances a student's cognitive and metacognitive skills.

Sight Words

Sight words are words that students are expected to recognize without relying on sounding them out. For example, some easier sight words include a, the, or each.

Vocabulary Organizers

Vocabulary organizers, such as word maps, graphic charts, and other tools, are key to helping students understand the different parts of a word. It helps teachers track which words are easier or more difficult for students to understand.
