Why is Literacy Important?

Literacy skills enable a student to read, write, and comprehend texts and new information effectively. These skills are the foundation for students to retrieve and apply the information they have learned.

Strategies to Support Literacy Skill Development

Summarizing

Summarizing a text helps students gain a better understanding of the text as a whole in simpler terms. Students will learn to distinguish the who, what, when, where, why, and how of a text and to condense that information into a summary.

Inferencing

An inference is an educated guess based on context clues, prior knowledge, and the surrounding text. "Inferences reflect a student’s ability to use
background knowledge, values, and beliefs combined
with evidence and logical reasoning" (Stetkevich & Bureau of Education and Research, USA, 2020).

Question-Answer-Relationships (QAR)

Question-Answer-Relationships help students to develop an understanding of how to find the answers related to a specific question. This improves student comprehension, while also supporting creative and cooperative work.

Listen, Read, Discuss

This strategy is developed to help students engage in active learning by promoting the use of prior knowledge. This strategy uses oral instruction for students to listen to, text instruction for students to read, and a follow-up discussion for students to collaborate and discuss their texts.
